The Bra Fitter Diaries: What Does Your “Sexy Bra” Look Like?

There’s so much to consider in a bra fitting: technical fit points, matching bra shape to body shape, personal comfort and style preferences…the list goes on. That’s why we’re so chatty – we’re trying to figure you out! One of the first questions we’ll ask is, “What kind of bra are you looking for today?” The answer varies from person to person. “Black!” “Nothing lacy!” “Beige!” “Wireless!” “Something fun!” “A really sexy bra!”

Some of these requests are pretty clear – a bra is either wireless or it’s not, you know? But some requests are more ambiguous. When someone asks for a sexy bra, I always have follow up questions! “Sexy” means something a little different to everyone, especially when it comes to their own personal style.

This goes hand in hand with what we talked about in our post on preparing for a bra fitting. Think about the words you’d use to describe your preferred style, and then break down what those words mean to you in concrete terms. It’s sort of like when you’re getting a new haircut or colour – the more specific you are in your description, the more likely you are to get the look you’ve been dreaming of. It’s the difference between, “I want something cool, a little grungy and tousled,” and “I want Kristen Stewart’s look, as seen in this picture I found on LaineyGossip a couple of months ago.”

Sure, there are some assumptions we can make when “sexy” is the goal. Sexy bras are often:

  • Lacy, perhaps even sheer
  • Low cut
  • Black, or red, or an animal print
  • Push-up styles

But there are loads of people who feel sexiest in hot pink, or deep blue, or a more “natural” cup shape. There are some people who feel more itchy than sexy when faced with lace, or don’t quite feel like themselves in a plunge bra. For example, if you asked Sam to pick out a super sexy bra for herself, there’s about a 99% chance that she’ll come up with something beige, probably with a “vintage look” pointy cup. It’s not my style, and maybe not yours, but to her that’s what sexy means! She’s got her reasons, too: “Because I’ve worked in lingerie so long, I guess nothing’s shocking anymore. I have drawers full of lacy, sheer black bras. So now beige (a colour I once avoided) suddenly seems transgressive and edgy to me!”

You’re the boss of your bod, and you get to decide what sexy means to you! Tell us what you want, and we’ll get you the Kristen Stewart’s haircut of bras – or, you know, whatever you’re dreaming of.

I’ve always loved the look of balconnet bras, or half-cup bras. Something about the rounded shape – what I call “corset boob” look, all high and rounded up top – just screams sexy. My Elomi balconnet bra is comfortable enough to wear every day, but I save it for special occasions because it makes me FEEL amazing. 🙂

Agreed! I ALWAYS bring in what a woman asks for first. BUT…I also make a point of bringing in one or two pieces she hasn’t asked for. I have found that many women are very rigid in their definitions of what their “sexy” is…and often, due to self esteem issues needlessly limit themselves. I LOVE gently taking a woman outside of her comfort zone, so she can see herself in something other than what she is accustomed to. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t…but when it does work, it’s a glorious thing! So many times, when presented with another option and just a gentle nudge, a gal leaves a fitting with something new and exiting, with a new found sense of confidence and self! My favourite thing to say in a fitting “YES! You CAN do this!!!” and know that my client believes it!
