The Bra Fitter Diaries: Get the Most Out of Your Bra Fitting

So we’ve talked about what to expect from a good bra fitter. Let’s flip it: what can do you to make your bra fitting experience a good one?

Before Your Fitting

If it’s your first fitting with us, preparation can start even before you visit. Look over your current bra wardrobe and think about what works for you and what doesn’t. Try laying all your bras out on your bed. Is there a particular colour theme that stands out? A particular style or shape? And if you hate all your current bras, think about what specifically bugs you about them.

If you have a favourite bra, consider wearing it to your fitting. And if your favourite bra no longer fits or has been discontinued, bring it in anyway. This gives us a better idea of what you like, and we may be able to find you something similar. (Sam is a wizard when it comes to this – I’ve seen her ID a bra based solely on the strap and then recommend a near duplicate on the spot.)

Go easy on perfume and other scented products the day of your fitting. Strong scents can cling to the bras you try on, and could cause skin irritation or migraines for other clients (or your fitter). And If you have long hair, consider bringing a hair tie or wearing your hair up. It’ll help keep hair from getting tangled or pulled during strap adjustments.

In the Fitting Room

Our “small” fitting room. The big one accommodates strollers!

Speak up. Be honest with your fitter! If the band feels too snug, or you’re not a fan of the pattern, or if the straps are giving you grief, we want to know about it. Our goal isn’t a quick’n’easy fitting (though it’s nice when it works out that way); we want to you leave with a bra you truly love and feel comfortable in. You won’t hurt our feelings by telling us when a bra’s not working for you.

Ask questions. We try to explain everything we do in a fitting, but if we’ve glossed over something or if it doesn’t make sense to you, please let us know. Knowledge, like chocolate cake, is for sharing. And we’d love to get nerdy with you!

Be gentle with the bras. When you love the idea of a particular bra, but it’s not quite the right fit, it can be tempting to pinch, pull, and tug at the cups to try to make it fit. Unfortunately, all that really does is damage delicate lace and fabric. Instead, tell us what you like about the bra and trust us to find you a similar one that matches your body.

One last note: boobs inspire strong feelings in their bearers. Some busty folks aren’t happy with their breast size; some are. Don’t assume that everyone hates their big boobs, or that everyone wishes their boobs were bigger. It’s a good idea to think before you talk negatively about your body or hypothetical bodies of others. We want everyone to feel comfortable here – you don’t have to love your bod, but be careful of other people’s feelings.

These are all little things, but when combined with a good bra fitter they’ll help you get the most out of your fitting experience. You’ll leave with a new favourite bra, an better understanding of fit, and probably sore abs from laughter. (We’re a really good time.)
